Congratulations to the Institute for Sustainability and Energy (ISEN) 2016-2017 Cluster Fellowship Award recipients. ISEN has administered the award since 2010 under the auspices of The Graduate School's Interdisciplinary Cluster Initiative whose goal is to support graduate studies in energy and sustainability. In addition to receiving a stipend, ISEN Cluster Fellows also support ISEN’s educational mandate as teaching assistants and receive automatic placement into ISEN’s graduate courses.
This year’s cohort represents exceptional students possessing expertise in a range of fields related to energy and sustainability.
- Quentin Sherman (Fourth-year Ph.D. candidate, Materials Science and Engineering) is focusing on developing computational models to predict how metals and alloys will corrode in various environmental conditions. This will help transition development of novel corrosion resistant materials from experimental processes to computational processes, which are faster and more efficient.
- Phillip Goodman (Third-year joint JD/MBA candidate) is studying legal structures and advanced project finance topics with the goal of developing innovative methods to get utility-scale renewable energy projects off the ground.
- Ding-Wen Chung (Second-year Ph.D. candidate, Materials Science and Engineering) is focusing on improving the operational temperature and corrosion resistance of cobalt based superalloy to increase efficiency in power generators and jet engines.
- Alex Grant (Second-year Ph.D. candidate, Chemical and Biological Engineering) is focusing on discovering new catalysts for synthesizing methanol from carbon dioxide in order to incentivize industry to repurpose carbon dioxide emissions.
- Lingqiao Li (Second-year Ph.D. candidate, Materials Science and Engineering) is developing synthetic concepts and methods to overcome the challenges associated with making polymer network materials (such as rubber tires) sustainable by recycling them into highly valued products.
